November golf in New York is a muddy business. The fairways at Van Cortlandt and Kissena are soft, the leaves are down, and every shot sends something home on your clubface. Before the bag goes into the hallway closet for the week - or the winter - it deserves twenty minutes at the sink. Clean equipment is the cheapest maintenance in the game, and a bucket in the bathtub is all it takes.
Heads and grooves
The method the gear editors at GOLF.com swear by is simpler than the gadgets: a bucket of warm, soapy water and a toothbrush or scrub brush. Work the face and sole until the dirt and dried grass are gone, dig out stubborn grooves with a tee, then towel everything dry. Dirt sits exactly where the ball meets the face, so this is the part that matters most.
Grips
Same bucket. Golf Pride's own care guide calls for a soft brush, soap and water between rounds - a thirty-second scrub, a rinse, and a thorough towel dry. Two habits make the difference. First, dry grips completely: moisture is the enemy of that fresh feel. Second, keep your hands clean during play, because dirt and skin oils transfer straight onto the rubber. Washed regularly, grips stay fresh longer.
What not to do
Do not put the clubs away wet, and do not park them next to a radiator or in a sunny window. Golf Pride is blunt about it: long exposure to heat and UV damages grips, and clubs belong in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. And do not put them away dirty for the season - whatever is on the club in November will still be there, harder, in April.
While you clean, inspect
The end of the season is the natural moment to look the bag over. The checklist from the grip makers: fading or wear in the grips, loose or bent clubs, chips and nicks in the gear. If a grip still looks shiny and feels slick after a real scrub, that is wear, not dirt - no amount of washing brings a worn grip back. A regrip at the shop runs $10 per club plus the cost of the grip, and if you want the whole bag gone over, our Winter Tune-Up covers up to 14 clubs for $199 - deep clean of heads, grooves and grips included.
